Air Austral is a French airline based in the French overseas department of Reunion in the Indian Ocean and its main operating base is Roland Garros Airport in Reunion. Established in 1974 by a local businessman, Air Austral now has around 900 employees and even owns a subsidiary airline, Ewa Air. Air Austral flies to 17 destinations with a fleet of 9 aircraft. The carrier is also a founding member of the Vanilla Alliance, an airline alliance composed of carriers based around the Indian Ocean.

How to Check in

Passengers catching flights with Air Austral have the option to check-in from the comfort of your own home online, or you can do things the traditional way by checking in at the airport. Those looking to check-in online can do so from 24 hours up to 1 hour before scheduled departure times. During the online check-in process you can also select a preferred seat and print out a boarding pass. However, be advised that not all flight routes currently support online check-in, so be prepared to check-in at the airport if necessary. At the airport check-in opens from 3 hours before flights, closing 1 hour before long-haul flights and 45 minutes before regional flights.

Baggage Allowances and Fees

All travelers flying with Air Austral are allowed to bring baggage to check-in free of charge, although your flight class and destination determines just how much you can bring. On long-haul flights, Loisirs fares allow 25kg and Confort fares allow 35kg, while Club Austral ticket holders are permitted up to 40kg. For regional flights, allowances are identical other than Confort ticket holders who are allowed 30kg of checked baggage. All passengers are also allowed one item of hand baggage to take on board no larger than 55cm x 40cm x 20cm and up to 10kg as well as a personal item such as a handbag or laptop.

On Board Service

Air Austral flights offer a regular Loisirs Economy Class as well as Confort Premium Economy seats and luxurious Club Austral seats on long-haul flights. All passengers are served a meal, with those in Club Austral Class able to select from a gourmet menu and enjoy fine wines. The airline also offers on board duty free shopping to pick up some last minute goods.
