Air Madagascar

Air Madagascar is the national airline of Madagascar operating flights across Africa, Europe and Asia with a fleet of 8 aircraft. The airline’s main operating hub is at Ivato International Airport in Antananarivo, the capital of the country, where it operates flights to 17 destinations. Initially established in 1962, Air Madagascar is primarily owned by the government of Madagascar and is a member of the Vanilla Alliance. The airline has its own frequent flyer program, Namako, and also has codeshares agreements with leading airlines including Etihad Airways.

How to Check in

Travelers catching flights with Air Madagascar will need to check in at the airport in person as the airline does not yet support online check ins. Check in counters open and close depending on your destination, so be sure to arrive at the correct time. Counters open 2 hours before domestic flights and close 1 hour before departures, while for long haul flights they open 3 hours and close 1 hour before flights. Be advised that the airline will reallocate any seats that you have pre-booked if you do not check in on time, so make sure you get to the airport well in advance of your flight to avoid disappointment.

Baggage Allowances and Fees

All passengers flying with Air Madagascar are permitted to bring checked baggage as part of the fare, although allowances vary depending on your cabin class and destination. For long haul and regional flights, those flying in Economy are allowed to bring up to 23kg of baggage, while on domestic flights this is decreased to 20kg per passenger. On all flight routes those flying in Business Class are entitled to bring up to 32kg of checked baggage. In addition to checked baggage, all passengers are allowed to bring one item of hand baggage on board flights in addition to a single accessory such as a laptop or suitcase.


Air Madagascar flights offer a regular Economy Class in addition to Premium Economy and Business Class for those who like to travel in luxury. Before flying all passengers are able to select a preferred seat, while travelers in Business Class can enjoy exclusive perks such as a dedicated fast track boarding counter and access to the airport lounge.
