Car Rental in Cairo
As one of the largest cities in Africa, the sprawling city of Cairo is home to some of the world’s most iconic historical landmarks and offers plenty more with its vibrant street markets, cafes and excellent museums. As many of Cairo’s finest attractions like the Pyramids of Giza aren’t directly connected to the local metro and there are many more places to see outside of Cairo, car rental is an ideal option to make the most of your trip.
Where to rent a car in Cairo
You will find many of the world’s leading car rental providers available directly from Cairo International Airport such as Avis, Budget, Europcar, Sixt and Hertz. Alternatively, there are numerous car rental offices located across the city with both local and international providers available. If you need to travel into central Cairo from the airport you are best off relying on the official airport taxis which you will recognize by their white color. Avoid accepting a ride from any unlicensed drivers.
Driving in Cairo
Navigating the roads in Cairo can be a stressful experience as you would expect in one of Africa’s largest cities. Locals rarely stick to the rules of the road so you can expect to be cut off and overtaken recklessly, while speeding on the motorways is also a regular occurrence. Do your best to steer well clear of the city center during the morning and evening rush hours on weekdays as traffic comes to a standstill and you may end up stuck for hours. The state of the roads outside of Cairo are poor and it is also ill-advised to drive outside the city limits at night. An International Driving Permit will be necessary to drive in Egypt so make sure you apply for one in advance of your journey.
Parking in Cairo
Parking is difficult to come by in Cairo and a new scheme to introduce multi-story smart parking lots has yet to be implemented. There are very few rules when it comes to parking so you will find locals using any available space as a parking lot. Hotels in Cairo will usually offer some form of parking but be sure to check with your hotel first as this is not a given. Modern malls will also have parking facilities and often provide valet parking too.
Where to go around Cairo
Cairo’s historic landmarks and modern attractions are spread out across the city so it is much easier to fit everything in with a car. The most famous attraction in Cairo is undoubtedly the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx which are found in the Giza area south of central Cairo and will only take around 30 minutes to reach by car (although it will be a lot longer during peak traffic hours). If you want an experience of local nature then drive out to the Wadi Digla Protected Area which is ideal for nature lovers and fitness enthusiasts.
