Driving in Chennai
Driving around in Chennai is very rarely a pleasant experience due to the incessant traffic and unruly local driving habits. You can expect reckless behavior, frequent overtaking maneuvers and speeding which can be intimidating for foreign visitors. Traffic is severe during the morning and evening so it is best to stay off the roads from 07.00-09.00 and 16.00-19.00 unless you want to get stuck in traffic. If you haven’t driven much in India in the past it is highly advisable to get a local driver with your car to make your experience a lot more comfortable. Satnav systems are also excellent to have if you plan on exploring the region surrounding the city.
Parking in Chennai
In Chennai a paid street-parking system is gradually being implemented to try and regulate the hectic state of parking in the city. Street parking in Chennai is currently cheap at the local equivalent of just 0.25 AED per hour which will rise to 1 AED per hour once the new system is implemented. There are also plans to further increase the number of street parking spaces across the city to cope with demand. There are private car parking facilities situated around the city which may be more suitable if you require long-term parking and don’t mind paying extra for private parking.
Where to go around Chennai
There are enough things to see and do in Chennai to keep any travelers occupied for weeks on end, but you will be glad to have your own rental car to see some of the incredible attractions outside of the city. Chennai is known for its numerous beaches such as Marina Beach and Elliot’s Beach which are best accessed by car, while the region’s excellent nature parks and reserves like Guindy National Park aren’t located centrally either. You can also take the East Coast Road which opens up access to many significant attractions like the UNESCO-listed Mamallapuram 50 km away and the 11th century Marundeeswarar Temple.
