Car Rental in Durban
Durban is South Africa’s third largest city and is situated along the eastern coast. The city offers many excellent attractions for travelers such as the vibrant Golden Mile beaches and the many national parks around the state of KwaZulu Natal within close traveling distance of the city. Undoubtedly the best way to explore Durban is to get a rental vehicle which also allows you to visit the many appealing destinations outside of the city.
Where to rent a car in Durban
You will find a number of international car rental agencies at King Shaka International Airport including Hertz, Europcar, Avis and Budget and many more local companies available to select from. Many counters are situated within the airport terminal itself, so you can easily visit them upon touching down. You don’t necessarily have to collect your vehicle from the airport as international providers also have a presence within the city center along with other local companies. Be aware that the majority of rental cars in South Africa will come with manual transmissions, so make sure you specify that you want an automatic if necessary.
Driving in Durban
In South Africa, traffic drives on the left-hand side of the road. As a busy city Durban experiences its fair share of traffic but things generally aren’t too bad outside of the morning and evening rush hours. Always drive very safely in Durban as the country has a poor road safety record and pedestrians often expect cars to stop for them as they cross the road. If you are exploring outside of Durban, be wary of wild animals crossing the roads. It will help to get a satnav system with your rental car as road signs can be confusing in the city and it will also come in handy when exploring national parks and other rural areas.
Parking in Durban
It shouldn’t be a problem finding parking in Durban whether it is on the streets, at your hotel or at a parking lot. A pay and display system is in operation for street parking in certain areas like the CBD, while in other urban areas you will be able to find free parking on the street. There are plenty of parking lots and garages located across the city which are much more secure options compared to street parking. Be sure to consult with your hotel about parking as many will be able to offer their own arrangements, saving you the need to find long-term parking yourself.
