Car Rental in Glasgow
Glasgow is Scotland’s most populous city offering something for everyone. Known for its world-class cultural institutions, colorful nightlife scene and excellent shopping districts, Glasgow is a city sure to live long in the memory. With a rental car you can make the most of your trip to Glasgow by also getting out of the city, with many appealing day-trip destinations within easy reach including nearby Edinburgh and the Ayrshire coast.
Where to rent a car in Glasgow
Many leading international car rental providers are available directly at Glasgow International Airport including Avis, Sixt, Hertz, Enterprise and Europcar. When you have arrived at the airport you will find all counters located within walking distance of the domestic arrivals hall. You don’t need to worry if you can’t collect your vehicle from the airport right away as car rental offices are situated across Glasgow.
Driving in Glasgow
Glasgow’s city center is quite compact so you won’t need a vehicle to see all the main sights. Traffic is frequently congested and there is a one-way system in place which can be confusing to visitors, so it is generally a bad idea to drive around the center. Be aware of bus lanes around Glasgow reserved for buses and taxis only, while you may want to get a satnav system to help you navigate the confusing streets. The roads and motorways leading out the city are very good so you can travel around Scotland stress-free including on the M8 to Edinburgh. Remember that traffic drives on the left-hand side of the road in the UK.
Parking in Glasgow
It will be difficult to find parking in central areas of Glasgow but is still possible; either on the street or at one of close to 20 council car parks across the city. A pay and display system is in operation in the city from Mon-Sat 08.00-18.00 in the city center. There is a 2 hour maximum stay which will cost up to 15 AED per hour. Outside of the center you are allowed up to 3 hours parking and it will cost around 6 AED per hour. You may prefer to park up in one of the private multistory car parks in Glasgow or a council-run parking lot. Some parking lots offer cheap all-day parking for as little as 30 AED for the day.
Where to go around Glasgow
Many of the most significant attractions in Glasgow are located in the compact city center but there are plenty more places to see with your own vehicle. Head out to the beautiful Loch Lomond lake which is less than an hour from Glasgow and make the rewarding hike up Ben Lomond which overlooks the lake. The nearby city of Stirling, famed for its medieval castle and ancient buildings, is only 40 minutes by car from Glasgow and the vibrant city of Edinburgh is just an hour away. If you are visiting over the summer you can drive down to the Ayrshire coast and visit some of the charming seaside resorts like Largs and Ayr.
