Car Rental in Kozhikode
The city of Kozhikode, also known as Calicut, is located in the beautiful state of Kerala and offers many memorable things to see and do with its stunning ancient temples, picturesque coastline and rugged wilderness. The lack of reliable public transport in Kozhikode, along with the many excellent places to go outside the city limits, makes car rental the optimum choice for exploring the city and the wider area.
Where to rent a car in Kozhikode
You will find a few car rental companies available directly at Kozhikode Airport including Keralacar, Kottayam Cars and Savaari. Alternatively, if you don’t want to collect your vehicle from the airport you can find many car rental offices across Kozhikode to visit. Most providers will offer a local driver with your vehicle who can navigate the local roads, but there will be self-drive options available if you would prefer this.
Driving in Kozhikode
Like many other Indian cities, it can be a daunting experience to take to the roads in Kozhikode if you have no prior experience. You can expect aggressive local drivers and a lack of regard for common rules of the road, while traffic in the city can be extremely bad in central areas. Once you get to grips with local driving habits it is much more comfortable driving in Kozhikode, but you should still try to avoid the roads during the morning and evening rush hours. In India, traffic drives on the left-hand side of the road and in most cases your rental company will provide a private driver for you given the difficult nature of roads in India.
Parking in Kozhikode
Parking has long been a problem in Kozhikode due to a lack of spaces; however, the city is gradually developing new parking spaces including multi-story car parks to solve this problem. There are currently over 50 parking lots across the city which provide parking for up to 1 AED, but security is often lacking. Most locals in the city will park up wherever there is a space by the side of the road. You should try to find a hotel capable of offering their own parking arrangements to keep your car and belongings secure.
