The beautiful city of Amritsar is famous as the home of the Golden Temple, locally known as Harmandir Sahib, a stunning golden structure that is the spiritual center of the Sikh religion. As well as being a truly awe-inspiring sight from the outside, visitors can go inside the temple and see some of the intricate details that went into creating this architectural masterpiece. There are plenty more important historical sites located around the city such as the Gobindgarh Fort which even puts on a few live shows. If you want to enjoy a taste of authentic local cuisine, head into the old city and sample some of the street food on offer or stumble upon a marketplace to bring back some local crafts with you.

Arriving In Amritsar

Sri Guru Ram Das Jee International Airport is the main airport serving Amritsar located around 10 km from the city center. The airport itself consists of two passenger terminals and offers a decent range of amenities including duty-free shopping, retail shops and a few snack bars. If you plan on getting a taxi once you have arrived you can go to a prepaid taxi counter to get a fair price, although there are also local buses available if you are on a budget.

Travelers booking flights from the UAE to Amritsar will be able to fly out of Dubai with Air India Express or SpiceJet. Be advised that all flights out of Dubai depart from Dubai International Airport, not to be confused with the newer Al Maktoum International Airport.

Amritsar Travel Information

In Amritsar the weather is generally hot for most of the year, so if you want to avoid the heat then be sure to visit sometime between November and March. The city also has a rainy season between July and August so you may want to avoid this period. Many nationals including those from the UAE are able to get an E-Visa online before making the journey. Remember that Amritsar is 1 hour and 30 minutes ahead of Dubai so be sure to change your clocks to local time as soon as you land.
