Where to Stay in Zanzibar
Visitors to the Spice Island tend to opt for the stunning beaches or the cultural heart of Stone Town. No matter your preference, you will find something to suit your taste and budget on the island from small and intimate accommodation to the larger beach resort developments.
Stone Town Hotels
The old city of Stone Town has seen little in the way of changes in the past two centuries so for visitors to Zanzibarit is the perfect place to soak up the history of its streets and ancient dwellings. It’s a place to be discovered alone on foot or with a local tour guide.
A luxurious hotel on Stone Town's beachfront, the Park Hyatt is located less than ten minutes from the Sultan’s Palace and is set in a 17th-century mansion. The hotel’s oceanfront infinity pool is an ideal spot to relax and enjoy views of the Indian Ocean.
Furnished with antiques and boasting a Colonial-style restaurant, the mid-range Africa House Hotel overlooks the Indian Ocean less than ten minutes from both the Darajani Market and the Forodhani Gardens.
A family-run hotel at the lower end of the price scale, the Funguni Palace Hotel is close to the beach and city center. With breakfast served on the rooftop restaurant, guests can start their day with idyllic views of the Indian Ocean.
Nungwi Beach Hotels
Zanzibar has more than 25 fantastic beaches with some more isolated than others. Nungwi is the most northerly tip of Zanzibar with a number of hotels and resorts aimed at those looking to simply relax on this paradise island.
Located directly on the beach, the hotel is a modern resort featuring thatched roofs and landscaped gardens. White sand, the tropical waters of the ocean and an outdoor plunge pool and pool bar add to the exotic setting.
A stunning property with some suites and villas on the beach itself and with others no more than a two-minute stroll from the water’s edge. Watersports and diving available on the private beach plus a kids’ club for younger visitors – all just 55km (34 miles) from Stone Town.
A budget option on the beach, Mnarani Beach Cottages offer basic yet comfortable rooms with snorkelling and kayaking available. A complimentary breakfast is also available.

Split between historic Stone Town and the new city, as a tourist, you'll likely want to spend most of your time in quaint Stone Town. Most Zanzibarians live here so a good place to observe local life. The newer side of town receives few visitors but is where most people live.
