The historic city of Ayutthaya is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I loved the ruins and the history of the old kingdom of Thailand. I was disappointed that some of the ruins were not maintained well, I saw garbage in some of the areas. What I enjoyed most about this trip is the elephant ride. For 400 baht, you can ride an elephant around the ruins for 15 mins. An unforgettable experience that shouldn't be missed!
Ayutthaya, founded in 1350, is just a short day trip from Bangkok. When researching a tour operator, make sure you get to spend enough time walking around because there is a lot to see. The tour we took was really rushed and I didn't get to explore as much as I would have liked. It is beautiful, though, and worth a visit.
When I went to Ayutthaya, I was in shock because my friend and I were the only travellers there. It's a beautiful city with some of Thailand's oldest and best preserved ruins. It was once the largest city in the whole world! Ayutthaya is a major destination for Thai travellers, but for some reason many tourists ignore it, despite its close proximity to Bangkok. Please check it out if you're in Thailand. Stay overnight at a guest house, rent a bicycle in the morning and explore the ruins.
Ayutthaya is a fascinating place. An ancient island capital city surrounded by rivers, teeming with temples and a scattering of palaces. A must see destination.
