What to do there

September in San Francisco offers warm temperatures and fewer people because it’s strictly off-season; the perfect combination for a great vacation! It’s also a wonderful city to explore outdoors, with activities such as walking the Golden Gate Bridge and taking a tour of Alcatraz prison island high on the list of best things to do. There’s also some excellent Chinese food (in the oldest Chinatown in North America), lots of public gardens for picnics, wonderful public art at the Coit Tower Murals, and the famous San Francisco cable car. Where to stay

The Hotel Zephyr San Francisco is a good family-friendly option in North Beach close to the San Francisco waterfront (home to the San Francisco Exploratorium and the fun Musée Mécanique. As the name suggests, it’s a rather quirky hotel with bright and fun public areas, which include a fire pit and a sort of sculpture garden. The rooms are contemporary, and quite generous in size, with all the amenities you’d expect – and a few, such a collection of games, that you might not! Turkey

What to do there

It really depends what sort of vacation you want; Turkey has it all! Enjoy a fun city break in Istanbul with visits to the Hagia Sofia, Blue Mosque and the Grand Bazaar. It’s only a short flight from the UAE so is a perfect destination for a long weekend. If you’d like to explore more of this wonderful country, add Cappadocia to your list and book a ride in a hot-air balloon and a night in a cave hotel. If you’re starting off in Istanbul, the Regie Ottoman Istanbul in Istanbul’s historic neighborhood is a five-star hotel without the five-star prices. Double rooms cost from around AED440 per night and for that you’ll get a large and very stylishly decorated room with television, mini-bar, WiFi, a safe, luggage rack and a hairdryer. The hotel also has a gym, sauna and popular restaurant. If you venture to Cappadocia, and we recommend you do, book a cave hotel such as The Gedik Cave Hotel which is a beautiful stone mansion furnished with the best Turkish rugs and wall hangings. Nice, France

What to do there

Nice has been pulling in European tourists for hundreds of years, and much of what attracted them crowds back then, is still there now. Much of Nice’s old town (Vieux Nice) is the same as it was in the 1800s and holds regular markets with some of the city’s best produce. There’s also picture-postcard beaches, great museums (such as The Musée Matisse and the Nice Archeological Museum), stunning churches and cathedrals, and restaurants serving up some of the best food in France

Where to stay

The Résidence Lamartine – Nice is a wonderful boutique aparthotel in a stunning building, and works for travelers who want more homely facilities. It around 10 minutes’ walk from the Promenade des Anglais and the beach as well as plenty of shops, theaters, cafes and museums. Rooms in September cost from around AED577 per night.

Montenegro

What to do there

Montenegro is much less developed for tourism than the likes of Croatia or the other Mediterranean countries but can easily compete in terms of beauty and culture. Kotor is one of the busier destinations with its attractive red-roofed buildings and ancient walls surrounding them. You can meander through the cobbled alleyways stopping for coffee and cake whenever it takes your fancy. It’s especially attractive at night and there’s lots of independent restaurants to tempt you out of your hotel. In September the city of Nikšić hosts the month-long September Days cultural festival packed with music, art, food, drink and theater events. There’s a great atmosphere and it’s the perfect excuse to visit what is arguably the country’s most artistic city.

Where to stay

There are lots of little boutique hotels in Kotor, some more authentic than others, and one favorite is the Boutique Hotel Astoria in the city’s old town, around 15 minutes’ walk from the St Triphon Cathedral and Old Town Walls. Some of the rooms have very interesting hand-painted murals on the walls, which actually blend nicely with the exposed stone. It also has a lovely outdoor courtyard; the perfect spot for a sunset dinner. Double rooms start from around Dh344 per night. Kiev, Ukraine

What to do there

This is one of Eastern Europe’s oldest cities and much of its original architecture remains. That said, it is now the most cosmopolitan city in the Ukraine and a popular tourist destination. Top things to do there include exploring the incredible cave monasteries (Pecherska Lavra), learning about the 1986 nuclear disaster at the Chernobyl Museum and visiting the St Sofia Cathedral which dates back to the 11th Century. 

Where to stay

There’s a healthy selection of big brand and boutique hotels in Kyev so you’re plenty to choose from. If you want to stick to something familiar, book a room at the InterContinental Hotels Kyiv. It is in a beautiful building and is certainly up to the usual InterContinental standards. Rooms cost from around AED900 per night in September. A cheaper option is the Mecure Kyiv Congress which has much smaller rooms but is in a nice neighborhood close to Pushkin Park.
