1. See the ruins of Pompeii

On the other side of Mount Vesuvius lies one of the world’s most incredible archaeological sights. When the volcano erupted in AD79 it buried the Roman city – and around 2,000 inhabitants – in pumice and volcanic ash. But instead of destroying everything in its path, the lapilli perfectly preserved it all. The result is an amazingly accurate look at Roman life. The site includes shops, temples, homes and amphitheatres, as well as the people who were inside them at the time of the eruption. It’s a fascinating peek into history and covers a huge 50 hectares. The audio guide can help explain what you’re seeing as you wander.

2. Grab a slice of pizza

There’s nowhere better in the world to enjoy a slice of pizza than in the bonafide birthplace of pizza! The benefit of there being so many pizzerias in Naples is you’re never likely to have a bad slice – below par pizzerias don’t last long. There’s close to a 1,000 pizzerias in the city but if you’re looking for the best of the best, find one endorsed by the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana – or one with a queue around the block. One of the most well-known and well-loved pizzerias in Naples is Sorbillo in Centro Storico. The queue is likely to be long, but so, so worth it.

6. Hike around Mt Vesuvius

Mt Vesuvius is probably the most famous volcano in the world, so we don’t think a trip to Naples would be complete without a closer look at it. It sits in the middle of the Parco Nazionale del Vesuvio and the views from the top – around 1,281 meters above sea level – are spectacular. 8. Visit Naples’ best art galleries

Probably the most famous art gallery in Naples is the Museo Nazionale di Capodimonte, housed in the grand Palazzo Reale di Capodimonte. The building, a former palace, took more than 100 years to build but was a mere hunting lodge for Charles VII of Bourbon! The gallery itself is split across 3 floors and more than 150 rooms. It is not for the feint hearted! But if you’re interested in seeing works by some of the greats including Boticelli and Bellini, this should certainly be on your list of things to do in Naples. For contemporary art, head to the Madre Museum (Museo D’Arte Contemporanea Donnaregina), which is close to the National Archaeological Museum and Naples Duomo and houses works by the likes of Andy Warhol and Jeff Koons.

I was asleep when he died. I had called the hospital to say one more good night… I awoke early, and as I descended the stairs I knew that he was dead. All was still save the sound of the television that had been left on in the night. An arts channel was on. An opera was playing. I was drawn to the screen as Tosca declared, with power and sorrow, her passion for the painter Cavaradossi. It was a cold March morning and I put on my sweater… The phone rang and I rose to answer. It was Robert’s youngest brother, Edward. He told me that he had given Robert one last kiss for me, as he had promised. I stood motionless, frozen; then slowly, as in a dream, returned to my chair. At that moment, Tosca began the great aria “Vissi d’arte”. I have lived for love, I have lived for Art”.
