How to maximise your holidays in 2026 The ultimate hack into unlocking more time off

Wish you had more time off in 2026? Well, it turns out you could have more than you realise (with some help from yours truly)

Same allowance, more time off

If you’ve worked for more than a year, you’re entitled to 30 calendar days of annual leave per year (those who have been employed between six months and a year are entitled to receive 2 paid days for each month of service). On top of that, UAE employees benefit from a generous public holiday calendar — with around 12 public holidays expected in 2026 — so ‘not enough time off’ is no longer an excuse to skip that dream trip!

Still, who would say no to even more paid time off? Here’s how you can plan your annual leave in 2026 to unlock even longer holidays, and even keep a few of those paid-leave days to extend your weekends in between.

The days we recommend taking off:

Take Thursday, 26–Friday, 27 March to get 9 days of holiday (Saturday, 22 – Sunday, 30 March) for Eid al-Fitr
Take Monday, 29 June plus Monday, 6–Friday, 10 July to get 16 days of holiday (Saturday, 27 June – Sunday, 12 July) for for Arafat Day and Eid al-Adha
Take Monday, 20–Thursday, 23 July to get 9 days of holiday (Saturday, 18–Sunday, 26 July) for Islamic New Year
Take Monday, 29 September–Friday, 3 October to get 9 days of holiday (Saturday, 27 September – Sunday, 5 October) for Mawlid al-Nabi (expected Thursday, 1 October)
Take Wednesday, 2 – Friday, 4 December to get 6 days of holiday (Monday, 1 December – Saturday, 6 December) for UAE National Day & Commemoration Day (expected Tuesday, 1 December & Wednesday, 2 December)

Getting more paid-time off in 2026

The UAE’s blended mix of fixed-dated holidays and Islamic festivals gives travellers several opportunities to turn just a few days of annual leave into week-long escapes. However, as Islamic holidays are determined by moon-sighting, dates may shift by one to two days, so it’s best to check official announcements closer to the time.

For the time being, we’ve worked out how you can unlock the best long breaks of 2026, by pairing annual leave with public holidays to create a smart travel planning guide for 2026:

Predicted public holidays in 2026

Below, you’ll see a list of all the public holidays for 2026 and the dates they fall on to help you optimise your annual leave and plan your trips with ease:

Thursday, 1 January - New Year’s Day

Monday, 16–Thursday, 19 March - Eid-al-Fitr

Thursday, 25 January - Arafat Day

Tuesday, 17 June - Hijri New Year

Friday, 26 - Sunday, 28 June - Eid-al-Adha

Thursday, 24 September - Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday

Tuesday, 1 December - Commemoration Day

Wednesday, 2–Thursday, 3 December - National Day

It’s worth noting that if a public holiday falls on a weekend, public-sector workers receive a weekday off in lieu, and while it isn’t legally mandatory for private-sector employees, most companies follow the same practice. So, most employees end up receiving the substitute day, especially for major holidays such as Eid or National Day.

FAQs

For the public sector, weekend holidays are typically moved to the next weekday. For the private sector, this is not legally mandatory — but most employers still grant a day off in lieu, especially for major holidays such as Eid or National Day.

Public holidays are announced at the federal level, so Dubai and Abu Dhabi observe the same official holiday dates. The only variation comes from Islamic holidays, which depend on moon-sighting and may be confirmed slightly differently in practice, but in almost all cases, both emirates follow the same final dates once announced.

Under UAE labour law, employees who work on an official public holiday must receive a substitute day off or additional compensation, usually a day’s wage plus extra pay determined by company policy. Most employers offer the substitute day, especially during major holidays such as Eid.

During big holidays, such as Eid and UAE National Day, many residents take advantage of the long weekends, so expect busier airport terminals, higher demand for flights and accommodation, and faster price changes. Travellers looking for the best fares set up Price Alerts with Skyscanner.

Only for the public sector, which officially works a half-day on Fridays. Most private-sector companies now operate a full Monday–Friday work week, with Friday hours determined by individual employer policy.
