Chennai Airport, also known as Chennai International Airport, is India’s fourth busiest passenger airport handling over 20 million passengers each year. The airport is situated around 20 km from the center of Chennai and operates as a base for a number of airlines including Jet Airways, IndiGo and SpiceJet. There are a wide range of services available at the airport including direct flights from the UAE.
Terminals at Chennai Airport
Chennai Airport is comprised of two passenger terminals in addition to a cargo terminal. The passenger terminal complex is split into one domestic terminal and one international terminal providing flights around India and to multiple global destinations.
The passenger terminal underwent extensive renovation and modernization work which was completed in 2012, including the development of a new domestic terminal. The Domestic and International terminals are located a considerable distance from one another. Traveling between terminals can be achieved either on foot, by coach or by free battery-run vehicles.
Facilities at Chennai Airport
An array of facilities and amenities are available to passengers at Chennai Airport. There are many shops on site at the airport including duty-free shopping alongside bookstores, newsagents and a pharmacy in the domestic terminal. A number of gift shops selling both luxury gifts and locally sourced hand-made goods are also available at the airport.
Many different eateries, cafés and snack bars are open in both terminals for those looking for a meal or a light snack. Alternatively, there a number of airport lounges providing beverages and snacks, whilst passengers have the option to enjoy the premium facilities at the Travel Club lounge in the International Terminal which includes hot meals and a bar. Each airport lounge also offers free Wi-Fi alongside newspapers, television and air conditioning. Passengers traveling with infants can utilize the child care rooms at the airport for privacy, whilst Chennai Airport also caters for disabled passengers with adapted toilet and rest facilities and special assistance.
Chennai Airport Travel Information
Public transportation routes go to and from Chennai Airport including a bus and train route into central Chennai. The train service runs from Tirisulam railway station next to Chennai Airport into Egmore Station in the center of Chennai. This train runs every 20-40 minutes and takes around 30 minutes. Alternatively, there is a bus stop outside the airport gate where travelers can catch a bus into the center of Chennai, with the journey taking around 45 minutes. Passengers should be advised that this bus stop is a considerable distance from the terminals.
Taxis are also readily available at Chennai Airport at the taxi ranks outside each terminal. These taxis operate on a pre-paid basis which can be arranged at the taxi counter in each Arrivals section. The journey time into central Chennai by taxi is roughly 40 minutes.
