Don't overlook Maun on your way to the Okavango Delta. The town's hotels and restaurants are some of the best in Botswana because of the high traffic of tourists. While there isn't a whole lot to do, I'd recommend spending a day here. Luxury travellers have a range to choose from, while the budget conscious can set up camp on the banks of the river and enjoy some solitude.

Maun is the gateway to the Okavango Delta. From here, you can fly to and from Southern Africa's major airports and arrange Delta expeditions ranging from self-organized adventures to luxury tented camp-based tours or scenic flights. Though at first glance it looks like a dusty frontier town complete with donkeys and goats wandering the streets, Maun has almost everything you'll need before heading out into the wilds of the Okavango: travel agencies, well stocked grocery stores, internet cafes, a post office, pharmacies, banks with ATMs, fishing supply stores, even fast food.

Maun is sort of like a cross between a slightly more affluent small southern African town and a wild west cowboy town, all scattered across a surprisingly large area. As a staging post for onward travel into the Okavango and Kalahari it is perfectly suitable, but not the sort of place you're likely to want to spend more than a night in.
