After registering the company in 2001, co-founder Gareth Williams launches Skyscanner from his spare bedroom. The following year, our first office opens in Edinburgh.
We welcome £1.5m Series A funding from Scottish Equity Partners, with an extra £1m in 2008.
For the first time, we have a million users in a single day.
The website launches in 30 languages globally.
With strong growth in Asia, we open an office in Singapore and back in the UK we acquire travel start-up Zoombu. Meanwhile, the Skyscanner app launches.
Sequoia Capital invest in Skyscanner in the same year that we move beyond flights, acquiring Spanish hotel comparison business Fogg and launching car rental in the app. We also open an office in Miami.
This is the year we focus on mobile, acquiring Distinction, an app development company based in Budapest, and launch hotel search in app. We start providing data insights to the travel industry with our new B2B platform. We also acquire Youbibi, a Chinese travel search site.
We open a new office in London and start a new venture in Asia, as we team up with Yahoo! Japan. We also become the first global travel metasearch to allow airlines to take direct bookings via a third party using New Distribution Capabilities.
The year starts with five new partners investing £128 million to support and accelerate our growth, and ends with Skyscanner being acquired by Ctrip (now Trip.com Group) in a deal valued at £1.4bn. It’s the largest travel tech acquisition Europe has ever seen.
We strengthen our reviews and recommendations by acquiring social content platform Twizoo.
Gareth becomes Chairperson, focusing on Skyscanner’s long-term vision. Our Chief Technology Officer, Bryan Dove, takes his place as CEO.
To help travelers book lower-emission flights, we introduce eco-labelling. It’s part of our wider mission to lead the global transformation to modern and sustainable travel. More than 100 million people now use Skyscanner every month.
