Flying to Jharsuguda

Jharsuguda Airport, official known as Veer Surendra Sai Airport, is located only 5 km from Jharsuguda and is a relatively new airport having opened up in September 2018, although the site has been an airfield since World War II. The airport is set within a single passenger terminal which can handle up to 300 passengers at a time. There are several domestic flights available to and from Jharsuguda Airport, although the airport does not yet handle any international flights so travelers will not be able to fly directly from the UAE. However, you will conveniently be able to reach Jharsuguda from the UAE with just a single connecting flight.

Arriving in Jharsuguda

Upon arriving in Jharsuguda you will be able to catch a taxi just outside of the terminal building or visit a counter inside the airport to pay for your journey before setting off. You can also get in contact with your local hotel or resort which will usually be able to provide a private transfer on your behalf. There are no public transportation links to the airport as of June 2019, so you’ll need to arrange for a private transfer or catch a taxi to reach your destination.

The district of Jharsuguda is one of India’s up-and-coming industrial areas known locally as the “Powerhouse of Odisha” with its many power and metallurgical plants. Despite its reputation primarily as an industrial zone, there are many exciting cultural events happening and landmarks springing up in the region. The addition of a brand-new airport to the region has helped to increase growth, with many travelers coming to the area to enjoy its vibrant cultural calendar like the Nuakhai Festival and Durga Puja. There are also several interesting sights to see around the region such as the Shree Pahadeswar Mandir and the stunning Koilighughar Falls.

Jharsuguda Travel Information

The climate in Jharsuguda gets just as hot as the UAE during the summer months with average highs exceeding 40 degrees in April and May. However, temperatures get far cooler over the winter period when rainfall is also at a minimum, making this the ideal time to visit the region. Be aware that there is a rainy season which hits the area in June and carries on until September. You can apply online for an e-visa before traveling to India as a UAE national which will allow you to stay for up to 60 days. The time zone is an hour 30 minutes ahead of the UAE so don’t forget to put your clocks forward when you land.
