Where to stay in Kozhikode

The coastal city of Kozhikode is located in the southern Indian state of Kerala close to the famous Kappad Beach where Vasco da Gama landed during his explorations and discovery of the Sea Route in 1498.

Formerly a significant spice trade center, Kozhikode – also known as Calicut – is famed for its central beach, which is overlooked by an old lighthouse and is popular for watching the stunning sunsets.

Today the city is a popular tourist destination - as well as remaining a center for domestic and international trade - thanks to the beaches, the peaks of the Wayanad Hills, the lush countryside and a wealth of historic sites. In the city center, visitors like to check out the tree-lined Mananchira Square complete with musical fountain and artificial pond.

The city's attractions can be easily reached by walking or by one of Kozhikode's different forms of public transport, which include bus services, autorickshaws and taxis, while car rental in Kozhikode – with or without a driver - is also a popular option.

A mighty seaport where Arab, Chinese and East African traders once converged, Kozhikode was previously the most important region of the Malabar Coast. Vasco da Gama landed on its shores in 1498, catapulting the region to global fame. Once the capital of the powerful Zamorins and a prominent trade and commerce centre, the winds of change have swept over this charming coastal land from time to time. The whiff of history continues to permeate the lanes, bazaars and business hubs of this great port of yesteryears. Lush green countryside, serene beaches, historic sites, wildlife sanctuaries, rivers and hills make Kozhikode a popular destination. Also adding to the legacy of this region is a unique culture and a warm friendly people.
