Flying to Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer Airport is situated around 15 km from central Jaisalmer and operates as both a commercial and military airport. The airport currently handles just a few regular domestic flights from around India and is set within a new passenger terminal which opened in 2013. The airport is fairly small and offers only a limited range of facilities and amenities, but you will still find a couple of places to eat and drink as well as convenience stores to pick up any basics. The airport only relatively recently commenced commercial flights in September 2017, so plenty more routes may open up in the future. It is not currently possible to travel directly from the UAE to Jaisalmer, but it will be possible to journey with just a single connecting flight.

Arriving in Jaisalmer

Upon arrival in Jaisalmer you’ll be able to catch a taxi from just outside the terminal building to reach your destination directly. You can visit one of the taxi counters inside the airport to pay for your journey beforehand, or you may prefer to catch a local auto-rickshaw for a cheaper way to reach your destination. Alternatively, private transfer companies are available and you can also get in touch with your hotel which may be able to provide their own shuttle service.

Jaisalmer is situated in the state of Rajasthan and is nicknamed “The Golden City” in homage to its golden desert landscape and architecture. The city offers a fascinating range of historical landmarks to complement its many outdoor opportunities. Adventurers will want to get out and explore the stunning sand dunes in the desert around the city, or you can visit the beautiful Gadisar Lake. Alternatively, enjoy a day of sightseeing by checking out the wonderful landmarks in the city like Jaisalmer Fort. The city caters well for foreign travelers with its many modern hotels and restaurants, but still preserves its authentic heritage with its bustling marketplaces and local eateries.

The weather in Jaisalmer gets just as hot as the UAE over the summer with average highs reaching up to 42 degrees in June. Rainfall is minimal across the year, while temperatures cool down significantly over the winter season. The general cost of living in Jaisalmer is significantly cheaper than prices in the UAE for most things like dining out and accommodation, so you can easily get by on a tight budget. Don’t forget to put your clocks forward by 1 hour and 30 minutes when you arrive to get on local time.
