What’s the free baggage allowance on SriLankan Airlines?
There are different baggage allowances on SriLankan Airlines, depending on where you’re flying to and from, and the class you’re in.
Dubai to Sri Lanka, for example, is a weight concept route and the baggage allowance is a generous 30kg in Economy and 40kg in Business/First. The bag shouldn’t be bigger than 158cm (length + height + weight) though!
If you’re flying on SriLankan Airlines to/from North, South and Central America, however, your baggage allowance is worked out by the number of bags, not the total weight:
- In Economy, you can check in 2 bags weighing 23kg each
- In Business/First you can check in 2 bags weighing 32kg each
Do infants get a baggage allowance with SriLankan Airlines?
Yes they do. Infants in all classes get a 10kg baggage allowance, but the dimensions should be no bigger than 115cm (length + height + weight).

How to boost your baggage allowance on SriLankan Airlines
Sign up to the FlySmiLes program
If you’re a member of the SriLankan Airlines loyalty program you’ll automatically become a member of the oneworld frequent flyer program and be rewarded every time you fly.
There are 5 FlySmiLes membership tiers and you get an extra baggage allowance the higher the tier:
Platinum – 20kg extra on all oneworld airline flights
Gold – 15kg extra on all oneworld airline flights
Classic – 5kg extra on all Sri Lankan Airlines flights
Silver – 12kg extra on all Sri Lankan Airlines flights
Buy your extra baggage in advance
If you know you’re going to go over the limit, you can pre-purchase extra baggage by contacting SriLankan Airlines customer service before you fly. The fees depend on your route, time of flight and fare type but you could save up to 60% on the airport excess baggage fees:
UAE to Sri Lanka – $15 (Dh55) per kilo
UAE to South East Asia – $25 (Dh92) per kilo
Sri Lanka to UAE – $15 (Dh55) per kilo
Sri Lanka to Europe – $30 (Dh110) per kilo
Buy a new more light-weight bag
If you’re still carrying your old suitcase that weighs 10kg even when it’s empty, consider buying a new one. There are some great suitcases on the market including this Travelpro Maxlite or this Delsey HeliumAero option which weighs just over 5kg. We know cheaper supermarket cases are tempting but what you save in money you’ll make up for in the extra weight and a case that will last. Make sure you pack light
If you’re vacationing in Sri Lanka, chances are you’ve got a different packing list to, say, a city break in Europe. Leave the bulky hairdryer and curling tongs at home (it’s a humid country, you’ll be fighting a losing battle!) and focus on clothes and accessories that are multipurpose or easy to mix and match. If you’re staying by the beach, a few large sarongs that can double as dresses will be useful, and go easy on the number of bikinis or shorts!

Don’t forget your additional ‘free’ cabin baggage
On top of your official hand baggage bag (which shouldn’t weigh more than 7kg) you’re also permitted to take one of these on board:
- One laptop
- An overcoat, blanket or wrap
- A lady’s handbag, purse or Duty Free item
- A small camera or a pair of binoculars
Each item must fit into the overhead locker, but if you pack well, it gives you a little bit more room to fill with books for the beach!
Mini-mize all of your toiletries
As well as taking your obligatory mini bottles of shampoo and conditioner (the hand baggage policy of 100ml liquids being in a clear, seal-able zip-lock is still in force) think mini soaps, mini towels, mini toothbrush and mini hairbrush. And if you haven’t already invested, think about investing in a tablet and downloading books, travel guides and magazines instead of carting it all in your suitcase or hand luggage. The SriLankan Airlines baggage allowance from the UAE is generous but there’s no point taking up weight and space when you don’t need to.
