Reasons To Visit Varanasi

Varanasi is known as one of the holiest cities in India and is a major pilgrimage site in the country. Undoubtedly the most famous icons of Varanasi are the Ghats overlooking the Ganges River where pilgrims enter the river to bathe, although the city is home to many other important landmarks such as the Jantar Mantar observatory and the beautiful Ramnagar Fort. An excellent way to see the city from a different perspective is to take a boat ride along the river, or you can take a walk through the winding streets and alleys of the city and get a true sense of local life. Given its religious significance in India, you can also expect to find many festivals and cultural events happening in the city across the year.

Varanasi Airport, known in full as Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport, is located around 25 km from Varanasi and handles a range of domestic and regional flights including direct flights from the UAE. Travelers looking to catch flights from the UAE to Varanasi will be able to make the journey directly out of Sharjah. Currently the only airline providing flights on this route is Air India Express (Air India Express baggage allowance and charges explained), with all flights departing out of Sharjah International Airport.

At Varanasi Airport you will find a small range of facilities and services, although the options are rather limited so don’t expect a wide range of places to eat and shop. When you have landed in Varanasi you can conveniently hop in a taxi just outside of the airport to reach the city, although those on a budget will be able to catch a local bus to the city from a bus stop which is around 10 minutes from the airport on foot.
