Etihad baggage allowance explained

Don't let last-minute baggage fees at the airport catch you out. We breakdown Etihad's luggage allowance.

What is Etihad baggage allowance? Different airlines have different rules, and it can be confusing getting your heard around them all! That's why we're here to help.

As with most airlines, the amount of baggage you can take on board your Etihad flight depends on your route and fare class. Below is an overview of the Etihad's baggage allowance rules.

Etihad's hand luggage allowance: size, weight and fees

Etihad cabin bag size

Etihad cabin bag weight

Number of bags allowed on board

Cost to check in oversized hand luggage

All fares: 56x36x23cm

Personal item must fit under the seat in front

Economy: 7kg

Business/First: 12kg (combined two-bag weight)

Personal item: 5kg

Economy: 1 cabin bag and 1 personal item

Business/First: 2 cabin bags and 1 personal item

Hand luggage over the size or weight restrictions will need to be checked into the hold and paid for as an additional checked bag

Etihad checked luggage allowance

Etihad's checked luggage allowance varies depending on your route and fare, though it's worth nothing that any basic fare ticket will not include checked luggage.

Similarly to Emirates, Etihad have separate weight and piece policies depending on where you're travelling. If you're flying to or from the US and Canada, you'll be limited to the number of bags you can bring with you, and each will be subject to a maximum weight limit. If you're travelling outside of North America, your allowance will be decided by the total baggage weight rather than weight per item.

Confused? Don't worry, simply take a look at the table below for a breakdown of the baggage rules to get you started.

Top tip

It's worth pre-booking your baggage at the point of purchase, or up to four hours before you fly, as you can save 65% off the cost of doing this at the airport.

Etihad's excess baggage fees

Etihad don't specify online what their excess baggage fees are, they simply encourage you to pay for all your luggage up front before your flight – so it's probably a good idea to do so! If you turn up at the airport with a bag within the weight restrictions but exceeding the size limitations, you will be charged a fee. If you arrive with a bag weighing more than 32kg, or with a bag where one side measures more than 300cm, that item will not be allowed on the plane.
