In the heart of Argentina's wine producing region, and at the edge of the Andes. Pretty close to Mt. Aconcagua, South America's tallest peak.Great starting point for arranging hikes into the Andes, or to relax and tour one of the regions many vineyards

Not exactly Mendoza, but SAN RAFAEL, Mendoza, is one of the cities I've enjoyed the most travelling within my country. If you guys are waiting for some outdoor action, this is a must. Great rivers, views and adventure there. Located 1000 km away from Bs As.

Overlooked by the majestic Andes and the awesome Mt Aconcagua, Mendoza is best known as a major centre of viniculture - its Malbecs and Cabernet Sauvignons the toast of the chattering classes. Aside from the vineyards (wineries) there are some outstanding examples of Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired villas, reminiscent of the Kaufmann House in Palm Springs. Mendoza is also a popular starting point for the road crossing into Chile: a tortuous climb through the Andes and past Mt Aconcagua, then perilous hairpin bends all the way down as you descend into the vineyards on the outskirts of Santiago.

I have to admit: the city of Mendoza was not my real focus. I just used it as a starting point to visit the nearby Lujan de Cuyo, Maipu, and Uco Valley wine regions. The city is surrounded by vineyards, and the Andes in the distance are never far from sight.
