As the de facto capital of Sri Lanka, Colombo is also the country’s primary cultural and commercial hub home to an exciting range of things to do and see. Culture lovers will jump at the chance to explore some of Sri Lanka’s finest ancient temples and historic sites in the area including the unique Gangaramaya Temple, a fusion of ancient and modern architecture. One of the most beautiful spots in the city to watch the sun go down is at the Galle Face Green Promenade, a vast open area overlooking the Indian Ocean. When to Visit Colombo
The Colombo weather remains excellent all year round, although it does experience two monsoon seasons between April and May as well as September to November. Although temperatures remain pleasantly warm throughout the year, those not used to the heat might prefer visiting between December and March when temperatures are at their coolest. Summers in Colombo get fairly hot, although they do not quite reach the sweltering highs of the UAE. The busiest tourism season in Colombo tends to be between January and March as temperatures cool down, and the city can get especially busy during the popular Duruthu Perahera Festival in January.
Flights to Colombo
Bandaranaike International Airport is the closest airport to Colombo, situated around 35km from the city center. There are direct flights to and from Dubai offered by Emirates, flydubai and SriLankan Airlines, while those coming from Abu Dhabi can fly with Etihad Airways, Rotana Jet or SriLankan Airlines. Colombo's second airport is Ratmalana Airport which provides domestic flights as well as charter flights.
Colombo Travel Information
Most visitors traveling into Colombo including those from the UAE will need to hold an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before or upon arriving into Sri Lanka which will remain valid for a period up to 30 days. Arranging a visa can be done online before traveling and this is recommended in order to beat the queues when arriving at the airport. The currency used in Sri Lanka is the Sri Lankan Rupee which has been the national currency since 1869.
