Driving in Barcelona
Barcelona can be a difficult city to navigate by car, especially in central areas where roads are almost always congested and there are many old, narrow roads to negotiate. Scooters and motorcycles are also a common sight on the streets which can make things even more difficult. However, other than the traffic the city isn’t too bad and most drivers will get used to it. Because of the local siesta custom where workers nap in the afternoon, the roads stay busy in the afternoon so there is rarely a let-up to the rush hour conditions.
Parking in Barcelona
In the center of Barcelona you will have trouble finding parking on the street, but there are plenty of multi-story car parks available if you don’t mind a short walk to your destination. Street parking is payable by the meter, with two different zones – Blue zones and Green zones. In Blue zones you can expect to pay around 12 AED per hour, while in Green zones it is slightly less at around 10 AED per hour. There are over 40 official car parks available around Barcelona offering short- and long-term parking at cheaper rates compared to street parking.
Where to go around Barcelona
Besides the famous attractions in the Old City, head to the trendy Eixample district with its Modernist architecture or south into Sants-Montjuic which is known for its museums. There are several top destinations within driving distance of Barcelona like the stunning Montserrat monastery high up in the mountains or the UNESCO-listed ancient Roman town of Tarragona just south of Barcelona. There are also several beautiful beaches situated along the coastline which are best accessed by vehicle.
