Car Rental in Hyderabad
Hyderabad is a large city which has spilled over into the nearby city of Secunderabad, effectively creating one large metropolitan area. With its rich history centered in the Old City and the authentic sights and sounds of its South, North, East and West Zones, make the most of your trip to Hyderabad with a rental car. You will also be just a drive from the many natural wonders of the region and several historic cities and towns are within easy day-trip distance.
Where to rent a car in Hyderabad
There are a couple of local car rental providers at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, the primary airport serving Hyderabad, so you can collect your vehicle as soon as you touch down. Alternatively, many more companies can be found across the city if you don’t need your vehicle right away. To travel into Hyderabad from the airport you can either hop in a taxi outside the terminal or catch one of the airport buses into the center. Be advised that most car rental agencies in India provide a driver with your vehicle due to the difficult driving conditions in the country, but if you really want a self-drive vehicle you will be able to find a company.
Driving in Hyderabad
You’ll have a difficult time at first driving in Hyderabad if you haven’t driven in India before, which is why most foreign visitors to the country will take up the option to have their own driver instead. However, if you do drive yourself then prepare for hectic road conditions and unruly driving behavior by locals. Traffic can also be unbearable in central areas, especially during the rush hours, so it is best to stay away from the city center from 07.30-09.00 and 17.00-18.30. Remember that in India you will need to drive on the left-hand side of the road and you will also need an International Driving Permit which you can apply for online before your trip.
Parking in Hyderabad
Finding parking spots in Hyderabad is a lot easier than other major Indian cities as the city benefits from several official parking lots. However, reckless street parking is still a common problem in the city so you are best off relying on official parking zones. Some of the hotels in Hyderabad and many of the malls and commercial complexes across the city provide their own parking facilities which have recently become free for up to 30 minutes (and completely free if you buy something from the establishment).
Where to go around Hyderabad
The most famous sights in Hyderabad are found in the Old City but you will want to explore the other zones in the city for the full experience. Along with the historic South Zone, check out the modern West Zone which is a leading global business destination or enjoy a night out in Central Zone with its high-end restaurants and bars. Several top travel destinations are only a drive away from Hyderabad such as the huge Snow World or the scenic city of Warangal.
