What to see and do in Chennai
Vibrant Chennai is a riot of color, sounds and aromas with bustling streets, lively entertainment, exotic food, smiling locals and plenty of Southern Indian culture to absorb. Once Madras, the first British trading post in South India, the legacy of the Raj is still visible in the city’s elegant colonial buildings and historic churches of old city. The best example is Fort St George. The white sandy beaches are beautiful and tranquil and are where locals come to fly their kites in the cool sea breeze. Tamil culture and heritage can be seen in the beautiful writing on shop fronts, in the music and dance performed in the streets and local venues and in the high profile film industry (Kollywood) that is second only to Bollywood in India. Fiery local food is both mouth-watering and eye-watering at once often served on traditional banana leaves. This beautiful city with its sun-warmed temples and swaying palm fringed beaches is a must for anyone who wants more than just a beach holiday.
