Air India

The flag carrier of India, Air India was first formed in 1932 under the name of Tata Airlines and began life distributing air mail around India. After becoming a public limited company in 1946, Tata Airlines changed its name to Air India and made its first international flight to London Heathrow in 1948. Air India is based in New Delhi. The airline has since grown to offer flights to over 90 destinations around the globe and has a fleet of 107 aircraft. How to Check in

Air India allows passengers to check-in online up between 48 hours and 2 hours before your departure time. All passengers checking in online will need to be able to print out your boarding pass in order to fly. For those travelling on domestic flights with Air India, boarding passes will be issued and check-in is available at the airport up to 2 hours before flight departures. When checking in at the airport, passengers should be advised that those flying in Economy Class are able to check-in up to 3 hours before flying, while those in First and Executive class can check in up to 2 hours before your flight.

Baggage Allowances and Fees

Passengers with Air India are permitted one item of check-in baggage and one personal item such as a handbag or computer. All check-in baggage must not exceed 32 kg and additional charges are required for all baggage over this limit. For those bringing hand luggage on board, the item must not exceed 55cm x 40cm x 20cm or 8 kg. For all international flights to the United States and Canada, travelers are permitted 2 items of baggage to check-in. The airline is also able to carry sports equipment any passengers may have for no additional fee.

Seating

When traveling with Air India, passengers are able to select a seat at the booking stage or online before departure. The airline offer different flight classes ranging from Economy to First Class where seating arrangements vary. Those flying in First Class can look forward to lie-flat seats, while passengers in Economy Class can enjoy seating between 17-18 inches wide. Seating in business class varies from reclining seats to lie-flat seats for those wishing to fly in comfort.

On Board Service

All Air India flights operate according to set meal times, but flights outside the allocated meal times still provide meals around the flight departure and arrival time. Meals also vary according to flight duration, with all flight classes entitled to a hot meal on flights exceeding 90 minutes. For flights under an hour, passengers are treated to vegetarian refreshments in Economy Class and snacks and hot drinks in Executive Class, while those in Executive Class are served a hot meal on flights between 61 to 90 minutes in duration. Alcohol is not served on any domestic flights and religious meals are available, although some meals require prior notice before your flight.
