Baby on Board: guides and rules for flying with a baby

Let us help you make your flight with a baby as easy as possible by answering some common questions about flying with children

There are lots of things to consider when flying with a baby – and that's before you even get on the plane! One of the most important, however, is to ensure you book the right kind of ticket for your child, and every airline has slightly different rules for doing so.

Can I take my baby on a plane?

Yes, you can. However, most airlines ask that babies are at least two weeks old before they travel, although some allow seven-day old infants to fly.

The policy for booking your infant onto a flight differs depending on who you're flying with, particularly if you’re booking a flight before your child is born. It’s therefore advisable to contact the airline in advance of your booking with Skyscanner so you know what to expect and what, if any, charges apply.

The good news is that most airlines will allow you to take a stroller, car seat or travel cot for free, but additional baggage may end up costing you more. Some airlines give infants their own baggage allowance of 5-10kg even if they don’t have a seat, but not all.

Let's take a look at how some of the major airline's allocate seats for infants.

What’s the difference between a child and an infant?

As with ticket types and baggage allowances, airlines have different definitions of what constitutes an infant and a child. Often, a child under 2 years of age is classified as an infant, and between 2 and 16-years-old, they're classed as a child.

If your child turns 2-years-old on holiday (or the age limit by which the airline you're travelling with deems your baby a 'child') it may affect the kind of return ticket you purchase, so be sure to clarify this with the airline before you book your tickets.

FAQs

With most airlines, you can take breast milk on a plane, even if you’re traveling without your child, as milk isn’t counted as part of your liquid allowance. Make sure all your milk is labelled properly and speak to the airline in advance to double check their individual rules. According to the TSA rules you should also be allowed to take any cooling packs needed to keep the milk fresh.

Acceptable age limits for infants vary from airline to airline. Many suggest that a child must be at least 14 days old, though some allow younger infants onboard. Newborns may be accepted on a flight if you have the required documentation and a medical certificate from a doctor, but again we recommend contacting the airline to confirm what their specific policy is.

Most airlines will be happy to accept a baby over two days old, but some won’t take a baby under two weeks old. Consider asking for a doctor’s note if you want to fly with a very young baby. Don’t forget you’ll need to wait for your baby’s passport to be issued if you plan to fly internationally.

Yes, they do. As soon as a child turns 2 (this includes the day they turn 2) you will need to buy a ticket for them. This will be counted as a child’s ticket and costs the same for a 2 year old as it does for an 11 year old. Also, if your child turns 2 while you’re on holiday you will need to book them a different ticket for the outward and returns flights. Some airlines will require you to pay for a child tickets for both legs of the trip.

As you can see from the table above, it entirely depends on the airline, as well as the route and route length. Some airlines allow children under the age of 2 to fly for free. However, as a general rule, be prepared to pay anything from 10% up to around 25% of a full adult fare to fly with a baby under 2.

Not necessarily. Some airlines will automatically allocate your infant or child's seat next to the adult who made the booking, but – especially with budget airlines – it's not always the case. It's worth paying to select seats at the point of booking if this is the case. Check the airline's policies before confirming the booking.
